Team Ironfish is excited for the opportunity to participate in The SWIM.
For us, this is a chance to spend a day with family and friends doing something we love to do. But, more importantly it's a chance to make a difference in the lives of many people in our communities that are struggling with cancer.
Everyone knows someone whose life has been changed by cancer, and through the SWIM everyone can help. Cancer prevention and early detection (when cancer is most curable) provide the best opportunities to impact the greatest number of people with the funds raised. By sponsoring our swim, you can make a difference too.
About St. Vincent's SWIM Across the Sound
St. Vincent's SWIM Across the Sound is a charitable, grass roots organization run by St. Vincent's Medical Center Foundation. Since 1987, the SWIM has a unique niche, providing cancer education, screening, and prevention programs at low- or no-cost for the underinsured and uninsured. In addition, the SWIM helps individual cancer patients on a case-by-case basis with specific needs, such as the funding of wigs and prostheses, medication assistance, free transportation to treatments and appointments, day-care scholarships and support groups. The SWIM does not support research.
The SWIM's mission is to:
- Break down barriers to access for cancer screening and prevention programs
- Provide education on minimizing risks for cancer
- Provide assistance to cancer patients with services that traditional health insurance will not cover
- Help individual cancer patients and their families on a case-by-case basis with specific needs, so that patients can concentrate on feeling better and family members can concentrate on caring for their loved ones
